What Counts as Evidence?

In REFOOTURE evidence is the accumulated learning of what actually works when communities, innovators, and institutions come together to build Regenerative and Inclusive Food Systems (RIFS) across East Africa.

This evidence base draws on the real experiences of communities, Food System Innovation Platforms, and researchers piloting change in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. It’s built to be transparent about what’s proven, what’s still emerging, and what’s being tested, so that policymakers, funders, accelerators, entrepreneurs, and communities alike can learn from what has genuinely moved the needle toward regenerative, inclusive food systems.

Inclusivity: Growing Together, Leaving No One Behind

Menengai’s crater and urban forest sustain thousands of small farms, and the pressure of daily survival is wearing both down. Through the Story of Place process, the community mapped what they were losing, named the imbalance driving it, and began reimagining their relationship with the land they depend on.

Story of Place: Wanja-Kerssa’s Place, Coffee Beneath the Canopy

Wanja-Kerssa grows some of Ethiopia’s most prized Arabica coffee beneath a shrinking forest. This Story of Place brings community knowledge and science together to guide locally led regeneration.

Story of Place: Arilo’s Place, Trees Our Fathers Kept for Our Children

In Uganda’s Yumbe Shea Belt, Arilo’s shea parklands and seasonal rivers shape a place people call a living being. The Story of Place drew on elders’ memory and ancestral stewardship to inspire pathways for regeneration.

Story of Place: Menengai’s place, A Loan, Not an Inheritance

Menengai’s crater and urban forest sustain thousands of small farms, and the pressure of daily survival is wearing both down.
